Access to sensitive data is more critical to data analytics and data science than ever before. But in today’s environment, speed to data access is contingent upon how secure that data is.

To help data teams achieve faster, safer, more cost efficient analytics and data science initiatives, we have formed a strategic alliance with Starburst Trino, formerly known as Presto SQL. Joint customers using Immuta and Starburst will now be able to unlock sensitive data in the cloud with automated data access control, security and privacy protection, allowing them to maximize the value of their data — even the most sensitive data.

Our partnership with Starburst allows organizations to seamlessly adapt to the challenges posed by evolving trends in data use, including:

  • The acceleration to a multi-cloud data ecosystem. Nearly all organizations leverage a cloud data platform, and the majority have adopted multiple. This shift has accelerated, which means data teams must manage data security and use across several cloud compute platforms. Without an automated data access control strategy, this is a complicated and time consuming task.
  • The proliferation of sensitive data use. Personal information is used by organizations in every industry from healthcare to retail. While this enhances the customer experience, it poses substantial risk if the wrong data is seen by the wrong people. Data engineers and architects have the daunting task of making sensitive data available for analytics and data science teams, but often have to rely on manual processes to ensure proper security and compliance.
  • The inability to curate a unified data catalog. As organizations ramp up cloud data use, many lack a unified, cross-cloud data catalog. This makes data more difficult to search, explore and use, particularly as sources grow.
  • Role explosion. Regulations and rule-based data restrictions necessitate the creation of additional roles to accommodate the latest data access combinations and requirements. This can lead to “role explosion,” which makes keeping track of which roles map to which data unmanageable.
  • The need for copying data. In addition to creating more roles, data teams often have to make copies of data in order to strip out sensitive information. The number of data copies quickly grows and data silos become outdated, while the risk of unauthorized access compounds with each copy made.

Our native integration with Starburst, and with other cloud data platforms like Databricks and Snowflake, aims to solve these challenges by enabling data engineering and operations teams to automatically detect sensitive data, write and enforce fine-grained access control policies, and provide on-demand auditing of cloud data use. Additionally, because Immuta’s dynamic security policies and privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) are applied at query time, data teams no longer have to copy, move, or manually mask private or sensitive information.

Here are a few of the features data teams will benefit from when using Starburst plus Immuta:

  • Sensitive Data Discovery & Classification: Immuta’s sensitive data discovery automates the detection and classification of sensitive attributes across Starburst, helping to save time and reduce risk.
  • Attribute-Based Access Control: Immuta applies row- and column-level security, as well as cell-level protection, to Starburst data without making copies, building custom plugins, or managing role-based access. Immuta’s modern, attribute-based access control (ABAC) policies are dynamically enforced on Starburst queries, providing fine-grained data access control over sensitive data, while maintaining compliance and reducing risk.
  • Dynamic Data Masking: Immuta provides a wide array of data masking tools that allow customers to dynamically anonymize data, unlocking the value and utility of sensitive data for internal analytics and external data sharing.
  • Policy Enforcement & Auditing: Starburst data teams can use Immuta’s policy enforcement and auditing capabilities to apply consistent access controls across platforms and easily audit data access and use, providing important transparency to legal and compliance teams.

As more organizations leverage multiple cloud compute platforms to maximize their data’s value, they are able to use Immuta in tandem with cloud data warehouses and compute engines for a seamless data access and analytics experience. Our Starburst native integration supports a wide range of technologies in the Starburst ecosystem including MongoDB, Cassandra, Elastic, Redis, and Kafka.

With our partnership, Immuta joins founding partners Alation, AWS, Google Cloud, Looker, Microsoft, and Tableau, among others, in Starburst Orbit, a program that provides partners with multiple options for engaging with Starburst and its customers based on their goals and objectives. This is the latest step in our ongoing effort to deliver native, automated access control, security, and privacy across major cloud data platforms.

“Starburst is a natural partner for Immuta. Both companies are focused on helping data-driven organizations maximize the value of data across complex data platforms and architectures by not just separating data storage from compute, but also separating compute and access control,” said Chris Devaney, Immuta’s Vice President of Alliances. “We see enormous opportunity in delivering the joint solution to organizations who must preserve privacy and security within an increasingly complex regulatory environment.”
